Unfortunately, the advice in that Ask Ubuntu page I linked to earlier does not match my own experimentation. The "rfkill block" command can be issued automatically as a script.

The main reason I brought up the "rfkill block" command in my earlier comment was so that when you get your Panda to work you could disable your internal wifi adapter via software rather than by physical means. I don't know the ramifications of having both adapters connected. After start up you could repeat Step 5 if you like to disconnect the internal adapter. When I shut down and restart my computer both the internal and external adapters are connected even though only one is connected before shutting down. Click on Disconnect for your internal adapter (probably the upper one) and you should now be running solely off of your Panda adapter. Again click on the Ethernet/wifi icon and you should see two wifi networks connected. Under Connection select your SSID with the 1 at the end, wait until the window populates the other boxes, click on Connect.ĥ. Under Wi-Fi adapter select the Panda, which will probably be Ralink.
Click on the Ethernet/wifi icon on the right side of your panel and select Connect to Hidden Wi-Fi Network. A second listing of your network should now appear under Wi-Fi with a number 1 after the name. Under the Wi-Fi Security tab select whatever the security type you set up for your router, enter the password for your network, and Save. Leave the defaults of Client mode and automatic MTU. Under the Wi-Fi tab enter the name of your wireless network.
Choose a Connection Type, Wi-Fi, and Create.
Under Wi-Fi you should see one and only one listing of your network's name (SSID). Open Network Connections from the Menu or by clicking on the Ethernet/wifi icon, typically found on the right side of the panel near the clock, and select Edit Connections.
